Overview

The Cost Controls Engineer plays a key role in monitoring and executing cost management and revenue projection processes. This role supports project teams by reviewing, preparing, analyzing, and maintaining cost forecasts, revenue projections, and financial reports in accordance with company standards. The Cost Controls Engineer ensures accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of project financial data while partnering closely with Operations to proactively identify risks and opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Driving continuous improvement by staying updated on industry best practices, tools, and technologies related to cost management
  • Support the implementation of process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of project execution
  • Generating reports and templates for Operations use on projects and/or at the Director level
  • Support the development of proof-of-concepts for new reporting tools
  • Developing feedback loop system for Operations to request data/reporting
  • Monitoring financial controls process compliance across projects
  • Assisting in the integration of company systems to track, monitor, and control financial data
  • Conduct meetings with project teams to review processes, project financial status, identify areas of improvement, and upskill our workforce
  • Perform regular project reviews and monitor projects against key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of detailed job cost forecasts and revenue projections
  • Supporting monthly cost reporting cycles in accordance with company deadlines
  • Assisting Operations in analyzing budget variances and forecast adjustments
  • Identifying financial risks, exposure, and contingency usage
  • Ensuring proper cost coding and adherence to company standards
  • Reviewing project startup budget setup and financial closeout
  • Training project teams on company standards, working with leadership to improve and refine standards
  • Identifying inconsistencies in project financials and work to resolve
  • Developing and delivering financial training and resources for operations
  • Participating in project financial review meetings
  • Assisting with portfolio-level roll-up reporting as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field
  • 2+ years of proven experience in cost management, project engineering, project controls, or similar role within the construction industry
  • Strong understanding of construction budgets, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Proficiency in Procore and project financial tools
  • Analytical mindset with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse project teams
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Working Conditions:

  • The Cost Controls Engineer’s work is primarily performed indoors out of a main office or field office at the construction site; occasionally outdoors in various weather conditions with some exposure to health or safety hazards, including noise level may range from moderate to loud
  • Position will require travel, and potentially being at a field office full time
  • Light physical effort is required, including the handling of objects up to 20 pounds and some standing, walking, sitting, talking and/or hearing
  • Environment will be demanding and fast paced
